Information
According to family notes he was the youngest of 12(?) boys and some sisters including Tom, Joseph, “Aunt Elizabeth Percy” (or Pursey). Elsewhere it says youngest but 1 of 9, 5 of which died young. The latter appears to be correct.

Sydney Bayly (his grandson) recorded information that he had been told by his grandfather who could recall as a child helping to lift paving stones to block back routes that King George lV’s wife Caroline's funeral was being taken along (1821), so they had to use the main roads. King George's treatment of her was considered disgraceful by Londoners. Daniel remembered as a child riding on a military baggage train, and he said that his father (Michael) had had a military funeral (he died when Daniel was 5 years old) Daniel also told Sydney that he had ridden with loaded pistols when he had worked for Pickfords and that during his twenties he looked after his mother living in Stanhope Terrace (Hampstead Road)12

Letters in the family archive from and to Daniel record his life as an agent for Pickfords. They cover a period from Mar 1833 to Sep 1835. He was sent to various places on the canal system in the north of England, and by Dec 1833 was stationed at Huddersfield and appointed the Yorkshire Agent, to expand Pickfords’ business there, a considerable responsibility for a 22 year old. He was in close contact with ‘Mr Baxendale’ who was the main manager (and owner). He had to learn to ride as he was constantly travelling. He complains of the expense of boots, clothes and other necessities like maps in connection with his work. It is clear from a letter sent to him that the competition to get trade is fierce, he is told to find as much information as possible about the boats and horses and other carriers, and to tell no-one! During this time he was sending his mother money for her rent; she was in poor health in London. He married Christmas 1834, partly so that Susannah could live with, and take care of his mother, but had to return north immediately. Worries about the health of family members, and their financial difficulties run through the letters.

In 1840 he was a coffee house keeper at 85 Cannon Street London, and purchased the freedom of the City of London (all people trading in the City were obliged to do so)29. He claimed on the Freedom papers 22 April 1840 that he was the son of the late Michl Bayly of Woolwich, conductor and afterwards clerk of stores belonging to the field train. Daniel occupying premises at 85 Cannon Street, coffeehouse keeper , and he was accepted 27th April. However it seems he also continued to work for Pickfords as a carrier’s clerk (see Gazetter entry below) His brother Thomas’s wife and family are at this address by 1851.

Daniel Rogers Bayly (sued and committed as Daniel Roberts Bayly) formerly of Key Street Huddersfield Yorkshire, afterwards of President street City Road, then of Macclesfield Terrace, City Road aforesaid, Middlesex, Carrier’s clerk, next of Cannon Street London, Coffee housekeeper and Carrier’s clerk, afterwards of Ferdinand Street Camden Town and late of Buck Street, Camden Town aforesaid, Middlesex, Carrier’s Clerk30

On Frederick James’ birth certificate, born 6 Sept. 1843, it shows D.R. living at Buck St. Camden Town, and described as a carrier’s clerk. As an agent of Pickfords,he was now working at the Camden depot. An email from Peter Ellis refers to a book dated 1849 “Stokers and Pokers’ written by F.B.Head that refers to Pickford’s at Camden Station. Two books from Pickfords show the Camden depot was opened in 1841 to take advantage of rail traffic on the London/Birmingham line. However its success was short-lived, and trade dwindled ["The Story of Pickfords", by Arthur Ingram,; and "Traffic and Transport" by Gerald L. Turnbull.]
