He lived at “Carlton”, 38 Oaklands Rd, Bexleyheath, then moved on retirement to a bungalow which was built for his wife and him: “Timaru” on Grinstead Lane, Lancing, Sussex. His son Arthur was already living in Lancing, and they wanted to move there. They bought a plot of land and had the bungalow built by a builder they already knew. Gladys helped her mother to do the flower garden at the front and back. Behind that was a rustic fence and behind that was where her father grew vegetables. Arthur only ‘worked’ in the garden in the morning and went down to the sea or to watch the bowls in the afternoon.
Gladys says her father was more responsible for disciplining the boys, when they were young.
