October 1879 Jane Newman was working at her uncle's shop. She was found drowned in the river, and Charles was accused of treating her so badly that she had committed suicide. An inquest returned an open verdict, but people were so incensed that they rioted for two nights running, as many as 2000 people gathering. Jane Newman's friend Mrs. Haywood was asked at the inquest if Charles spoke kindly to Jane; her answer was that she had 'never heard him speak kindly to anyone.'
