In Freedom of the City Admission Papers 1681-1925 (Ancestry) on 2 May 1820 he was apprenticed to Andrew Spottiswood, stationer, for 7 years, father was George Haswell of Duncan Place Hackney, accountant.
Carol Bradley found some apprentice records for John James.. It does
confirm that John James was a printer up until 1828 having served his
apprenticeship in 1820.

Todd Farmerie- “ November 1834, he and brother George were hired by Duff Green, publisher of the Washington, D.C.-based U. S. Telegraph, as foremen, instituting production quotas. The journeymen (professional) printers launched a labor action, and John was dismissed, and returned to Philadelphia.”
132 According to the newspaper article by the Printers Union, John J Haswell who had recently been appointed to Duff Green’s office had appeared to be supporting the workers but had been underhand and had reported on the workers to Duff Green , his conduct became “arbitary ungentlemanly and tyrranical. John J was sacked or resigned. George D Haswell was foreman of the stereotype office. He then exacted revenge on the workers (according to them). When they striked, he went to Philadelphia and brought back others to work. According to the workers the two Haswell brothers educated and brought up in a country “foreign to our habits and dispositions”, “cared not what became of our craft”.
He has entry in Emigrant Savings bank in New York no 111683 (no date known)

John J and Geo D were printing mainly medical books.
Todd Farmerie- “By 1840 was established in New Orleans, John J. Haswell & Co., printers, co-issuing a book with Haswell, Barrington & Haswell of Philadelphia, and he was a bookseller there in 1842. He was probably the Mr. Haswell, aged 38, who arrived in New Orleans from Galveston, Texas on the Galveston 17 Dec. 1845 (although the age better matches brother George). He was, in all probability, the John S.(sic) Haswell who appears in Houston Co., Texas in 1846.
According to the court case of Towar v. Barrington, Geo Haswell and Mary Ann Haswell on 15 Mar 1851, John J had left the businesses in Philadelphia & New Orleans on 21st July 1841, and died 7th March 1846.
