Information
My Parents Saw His Grave And Headstone Near The Gate
Michael was a farmer of some means living in Mottingham, Kent. According to D.B.Bayly the inscription on his gravestone near the gate in St. John’s Eltham Churchyard gave his dates as 1700-1777, and this is confirmed by the parish register burial record. He married Elizabeth FRENCH at St John’s Eltham on 3rd January 1723. Elizabeth was born about 1703/4 according to her parish register burial entry. Michael and Elizabeth had at least twelve children, but many of them died young. At least two births were not recorded in the parish register, but they appear in Michael’s will. Several of the children were privately baptised. The clerk entering their names in the parish register chose a variety of ways to spell BAYLY, but he nearly always added son/daughter “of Michael of Mottingham”. Mottingham was a small hamlet, having no church of its own.
