In 1882 there is a letter from his wife from 29 Lawrence Road Bow.

Hawksley’s Patent Staircase works were at High Street Bromley-by-Bow, and also at Napier Yard on the Isle of Dogs. The treads comprised wooden cubes in wrought-iron framing, supposedly stronger than using cast-iron frames, and the blocks could be reversed. They were extensively used in railway stations which may have been how FJ knew about them.

Between 1888 and 1898 there are letters to his son CFH from Moreton House, 49 Kentish Town Road. When his first wife dies in 1894 he is a coal merchant. In PO directory of 1895 at 49 Kentish Town Road13 From information from Camden Local Studies this was the depot for Locket and Judkins. It was on the west side of Kentish Town Road between Hawley Crescent and Hawley Road. From photo we have, he says the buildings to right of photo may still be standing. Locket & Judkins had a number of offices throughout London. The photo shows the large lump of coal (over 5 feet tall) that was outside the premises.

According to the poor rate book of Oct 1890 (St Pancras Vestry), (Camden Local Studies) 49 to 51 Kentish Town Road was occupied by Edward Charles JUDKINS, George Cooper LOCKETT, Euner? Smith JUDKINS, and George LOCKETT, “name of every man” Frederick James BAYLY, John WINDFIELD, and at 51 Colet CHALMERS. Number 39 was a public house, between 41 and 43 was Staple and Cox’s wharf. 49-51 was also a coal depot.
