Information
Like my grandfather, was known as Has, or Hassie. He was a teacher, having his own school for a time.He met Ellen[known as Nellie] at university Queen’s college, Oxford) where she taught music, she taught him violin and he fell hopelessly in love with her, she was ten years older than him. With his wife he went to China as missionaries (in the 20s or early 30s) They were Quakers. They went a thousand miles up the Yangtze river encountering brigands and all sorts of dangers. They went to ChunKing. Son Edgar (Ted) was born on a table in the kitchen. When they arrived Hassie realised he couldn’t do his work as a missionary properly without speaking the language so he refused the money of the Quakers and took a job amongst the Chinese until he could speak the language fluently. This story came from Gwen Bayly and is indicative of his high moral standards. However his wife could not cope with life in China (with the children there too) and they returned home. From his letters he had a sharp wit. We visited when I was small, and he gave me a pair of wooden chopsticks.

He was always known as Hassie
